MH Update

There's a good chance that a new Marble Hornets won't be posted until 2011. That's kind of frustrating. The "powers that be" are holding up a stop sign at the moment until one or two details are ironed out. I guess I'll just consider it a longer than expected break. I'm getting antsy. I really hate making people wait.

So to keep you occupied for... however long it takes you to read it, I'll talk about some kind of neat production stuff.

So far, all of the entries of season two have been co-directed, a pretty big change from season one, which I attempted to direct all on my own. I was stubborn on how I wanted everything to go, and didn't want to give up the reigns easily. But I think I've grown out of that now, and am more willing to let someone else have a turn. Most everyone involved with Marble Hornets is a seasoned veteran by now and knows precisely the look we need. Unsurprisingly, it's Joseph that has stepped up on multiple occasions, usually when I'm already involved in a scene with Jessica, to sit with us during rehearsal and give us feedback. When the camera starts rolling, he becomes a really sharp listener and isn't shy to let us know when something isn't working. I should point out that he's had absolutely no experience with this kind of stuff before Marble Hornets started, so it's really cool that he's caught on so easily. I know he sounds all self deprecating in the radio interview , but he basically knows what he's doing as far as actual shooting is involved. He just wants attention. Don't give it to him.

Oh yeah, something else I've been meaning to comment on for a while now. Our acting. I read all the major forums dedicated to Marble Hornets every other day or so, and I'm happy to see that people seem to think I've gotten better at playing Jay. I must admit, in season one I wasn't too concerned with him as a character, I opted instead to have him as an extension of the camera. A medium for the story to be told, if it doesn't sound too pretentious (it probably does). The Gordon Freeman. That's the best way I can put it. But for season two, without spoiling anything that's already obvious, Jay is going to be much more involved besides being the human tripod. Luckily, I've been in one of the best acting classes I've ever had since this season started, and I feel pretty capable of the things that Jay has in store for him. We'll see.

That being said, I know that I nor any of the other people in front of the camera are not professional actors. There's been a few performance hiccups this season already (the latest entry is a good example in spots). I'm not going to try and defend it against the negatives that have been said with stupid, clichéd excuses like "YOUR STANDARDS ARE TOO HIGH" or "LET'S SEE YOU DO IT BETTER". Most of the time what I read are valid criticisms. But I will say that we're trying our hardest this season to address this kind of thing. Poor acting can take people out of atmospheric stuff like this super easily. That's the exact opposite of what we want, obviously. So believe me when I say we're taking it all more seriously now. No more completely improvised stuff like in last season. Promise.

So yeah. That's all I got for now. I guess it's time to go get a shower and figure out what the hell I want to do today. Maybe drop kick Joseph off a cliff.

  1. I can't help but think that this comic is totally about Jay: http://xkcd.com/621/

Keep up the good work on MH, and have a happy new year(!)

  2. I have to say Troy, you and the guys are one of the reasons I started doing Performing Arts. I love stuff like Marble Hornets, and I'm so happy its back. I dont mind waiting till the new year! It'll be worth it! :D

  3. So far Troy I'm loving the new MH season. My only major concern was the acting "hiccups" you mentioned-but I must say that you guys have improved a lot since you started. Keep going strong!

  4. It's rad that you keep up with the forums and listen to peoples' criticisms. It's especially nice to see that you don't seem discouraged by the bitchier fans. However, do take the criticism of the masses with at least a bit of a grain of salt. I think there's a fair chunk of people who jump on the 'homg MH had bad acting' bandwagon for very little reason, and then judge new episodes through that lens.

It IS exciting to hear that you'll be taking Jay in some direction this season, though! The Christmas tweet was so very woobie.

  5. As long as you're continually attempting to improve your art, that's all anyone can ask, and it will always show through. It's why people like Ed Wood as a person but hate Uwe Boll: Wood was a terrible director, but at least he tried to improve, while Boll just continues to do things half-assed and expects everyone to love it.

  6. Looking forward to seeing #31 when I can finally get away from work! People do get antsy when there isn't content, but considering the resources you are working with when it comes to time, money, space and equipment - the output is of the highest quality!

Don't listen to the haters, haters gon' hate.

  7. For what it's worth, I think you've been more than fine for updating and posting new entries. A week or two isn't long to wait at all, and variation in the schedule lends authenticity to the kind of story Marble Hornets is and the format it uses. Unless Jay's decided to try and post something every week just to have a record of what he's been doing and what's been going on, which, you know, is totally equally valid.

Also, I have never had any issues with the acting in Marble Hornets, but I am one among many and that doesn't invalidate criticism, but keep striving to better the art and keep being awesome. That's what makes the difference.

  8. So, Troy, I figured that this would be the best place to get in touch with you about this.

I've been involved with the Slenderblog community that you may or may not follow. I don't know. But anyway, I've joined a forum that's been analyzing your videos. Responses from them have been relatively underwhelming so far for season two. They've complained about the acting some and have just shown general dissatisfaction with the second season.

I went there tonight, after you posted Entry #32, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. We all found it to be as frightening as the first season entries (there were complains that the second season had fallen short). Jessica wasn't too popular among us, but everyone agrees that her acting was amazing this last entry. It probably sounds like I'm rambling, but I just wanted you to know that those of us who were doubting you aren't doubting anymore. You and the rest of the crew are really delivering, and it's extremely satisfying to see this buildup paying off.

Incidentally, on an unrelated note, I was curious as to how exactly you went around promoting Marble Hornets. You definitely had a pretty large base of followers by the end of the first season, but how exactly did you start that initial launch?

Anyway, sorry if I'm coming across as a MH fanboy here. I just wanted to give you props and reassurance that your fans have definitely not given up on you.

    Andy
