Now suddenly this

I'm sure a lot of you have already heard the news by now, but in case you haven't, a movie based on Marble Hornets is currently in the early stages of development! Which is totally nuts.

Here is the article from Variety with the announcement.

It's something that's been in the works for the last couple of years now, so it's refreshing to finally be able to talk about it in the open. I can't really get into too many details about it just yet, but here's what I'm at liberty to share:

-Assuming everything stays on schedule, it will be shot this spring. Rough release dates have been tossed around, but nothing is anywhere near to being set in stone yet.

-It's being produced by Mosaic, who are mainly known for producing comedies, but is taking its first foray into a new genre with this. We've spoken on the phone with them plenty of times and they're all super dedicated to making the movie the best it can possibly be.

-The director will be James Moran, who has done tons of stuff. He was the second unit director for the three most recent Paranormal Activity movies, which shows that he's plenty experienced in a film making style similar to Marble Hornets.

-The script has already been written by Ian Shorr, and both Joseph and I have read it. It's great!

-We will be involved with the movie in a certain capacity, but I can't get more specific than that.

-This absolutely does not mean people can't make a series like this anymore, nor does it mean we're going to send out lawyers or something to the ones that are already out there. That's the last thing I'd ever want to have happen.

-And finally, Marble Hornets will not be ending early because of this, I promise. Nothing at all has changed on that front.

That's all I'm able to say right now. We're all super excited that the stars have aligned to make this happen. We knew, and were told plenty of times, to keep our expectations low with getting this movie made. There were no empty promises. After the past few years, I now fully understand why it usually takes things so long to get greenlit in Hollywood. Luckily, the hardest part is done now. That's not to say there won't still be challenges, but at least the ones left are significantly less daunting.

I'm stoked, and I hope you are too! Stay tuned.

  1. Are you at all worried about this movie possibly overshadowing Marble Hornets? I assume it won't have the same title, as it's "based on," but if the premise is similar there's a chance people won't ever find the source material, or worse, find it and not watch it.

  2. Is this going to be in the same continuum as marble hornets, or a new/unrelated timeline?

  3. Do you at all feel like this could cause a split with Slenderman fans within the Hornet community, or at large? I know that's been a concern with some of the folks I've spoke with.

  4. Oh man congratulations! You've been so dedicated to this series, and honestly it's so good to see you guys, independent film makers, getting recognized by the mainstream. Best of luck guys!

  5. Will the original cast of MH be starring in this as well??

    1. Yes please. I'm worried that this will attract a new group of Slender fans who think the movie is based off of Slender (yes, the video game) and who think they know everything about Slenderman without watching a single Slendervlog or reading a single Slenderblog.

  8. No. No. Stop the press. Pull Moran. No. Do not. Proceed. End this transmission.

Don't get me wrong, I want you all to have amazing success.

But general horror world verdict is Moran is a laughing stock... which means MH and Slenderman will become a laughing stock of the horror fandom, just like Paranormal Activity and Prom Date.

That means /you/ will become a laughing stock.

Granted it would be great to see you guys at horror cons, signing autographs for what is probably one of the coolest fandoms that exists... but if things are looking as they are with that crew? Good luck. Hope you and good old Slendy keep your dignity through this.

    1. Also. * Prom Night. See that's how little we can stand that movie... can't even keep its name right.

    2. Dude, don't be an ass. This isn't your moment, it's theirs. If you're a committed enough fan to worry about the quality of the movie, that's great! And hopefully, that would also mean you trust these guys enough to make good decisions.

That being said, congratulations. So hard. Through the roof. That's how hard that congratulations is. I cannot wait.

    3. Dude, Moran was the 2nd AD on "Prom Night" and the 1st AD on the "Paranormal" flicks. When a movie turns out shitty, does you run around saying "Wow, that Assistant Director sure fucked that up?"

    4. Badger - I am /extremely/ happy for them. I hope it gets them somewhere. But along with some mates that graduated from that place known as OCU Film Institute and have had a taste of how it is working with hollywood... well, I have my rights and my reasons to be very concerned. I do, wholeheartedly, trust the original MH team to make good decisions. I don't trust the higher ups to execute them.

Being someone who knows films a bit more deeply than your average joe, other anon, yes. Yes, I do put the blame on most of the upper production crew. I also get really mad when just a director gets props for a film's achievements, so the road /does/ go both ways.

Listen. I'm just scared that this is going to turn into what all of the films Moran has worked on (except a whopping one, which was Vacancy) exemplified: Flat, stereotypical characters that bore you to sleep instead of getting you so damn emotionally divulged in a the character that you want to flip tables or cry (watching a certain figure, for example, being dragged under... not to spoil anything, hence the vagueness.) Even worse if we look at the Paranormal Activity model: they're all films with flat, dull characters that have the added element of extremely obvious and poorly done jump scares. Neither flat nor obvious jump scare is Marble Hornets. I don't want to see MH go that way. I don't want to see Slenderman as a simple trick thrown on a screen in a flash that makes you go "OH SHI -- Ohhhhh dat silly Slendy!" That's why I've stopped watching most other vlog style Slender series while MH has kept my interest.

Good luck guys. I hope this works out better for you than it has myself and my mates. If you somehow find some more magic to spread, I have a friend who has seen the bad side and she still won't give up, despite the fact that half of her trade is dying. Special effects artist and wants to be a producer or writer, bless her poor friggin soul. Traditional SPFX are near dead.

      But anyways I'm rambling.

Good luck guys. I really want to see this end up working wonders for you, but remember you're gonna need willpower, diligence, and probably a shitton of chocolate.

    5. I would be curious to know what horror movies you think are good, because in my opinion the Paranormal Activity movies are one of the few horror movies left. Pretty much every other horror movie i have seen in recent years relies on torture porn and over the top killings. It just seems like most horror movies have entirely given up on being scary and just want the audience to be disgusted.

So to me it is great news that Marble Hornets will have a chance of being scary, like the series is, instead of the operator murdering everyone in sight.

    6. Well dude you got Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring, Sinister, from what i've seen, any other horror movie Blumhouse Productions has released has been scarier than the Paranormal Activity series. I know they were all released by Blumhouse but they've put out way better movies in the sense of storytelling and scares that leave you shivering in the summer. Not to be hating on em or anything since PA's style is pretty much how MH has been filmed, but to say the Paranormal Activity movies are one of the best would have to mean you just havent dug deep enough past mainstream releases. On a different note, I will agree that the Paranormal Activity movies are better than what has been released in theaters lately besides the above mentioned movies.

  10. Question: Did this have anything to do with trying to get Doug Jones on board a while back?

  11. Are you at all worried that the hollywood boys you're working with are going to try to copyright ol' slendy as a result of this? How will you feel if that happens?

  12. What great, guys! :) You all deserve the best so much for too good work, really D:

  16. Troy, I really hope you guys are going to give major credit to Victor Surge, since he was the first guy to actually create and name Slenderman. It may also be advised to make some references to the fact that things like The Slenderman have been around for thousands of years, and that what you have is actually The Operator, and is not purely Slenderman. Just a little advice.

    1. I agree 100%.

They do give credit to something awful on their youtube credits, but im not entirely sure if they ever mentioned victor surge.

    2. You're right, it would be nice if they gave credit to Eric Knudsen (which is his real name). However, it's also important to note that while the character had already been created, MH built on it significantly. There wasn't really any Mythos back in 2009, when the series started, just the character. MH was what really started to build up many aspects of the Mythos. So while we all have Mr. Knudsen to thank, and it is his character and no one else's, don't take anything away from what the MH guys did.

    3. (^an update to my previous comment)

I feel so silly now. They DID give credit to Victor Surge in their credits. It's just that they used his real name, not his forum name! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHR7lnMWQlI

  17. Congrats on the big break Troy!

Can I ask if this going to interfere with you guys filming the rest of season 3?

  18. I always thought that you'd go far, but I never expected something quite this awesome! Marble Hornets is seriously one of the best things on the internet, and I have no doubt that it will make a kickass movie.

  19. So will you be recieving royalties or other forms of profit from the movie?

  20. Is this 'The Entity' or is that a different slenderman film that's being made? If this is different will it be called 'Marble Hornets?'

    1. It's different. Not much info is out there about the MH movie, but there's a lot for The Entity.

  21. I have a feeling that the actual MH guys won't be starring in this movie...though, to tell you the truth, if that were the case we'd all be so happy. I just can't imagine anyone else playing your characters! :3

  22. Like many others, I'm interested to in beginning a horroresque faux documentary. I'm experienced the writing and scripts but totally clueless on the filming and software involved to get it started. Any tips on which software/cameras I should experiment with?

  23. Sounds freaking awesome! Too bad you guys won't be IN the movie! Let's hope they pick good actors.
